Our Parish Story
For over a century, the Catholic communities of St Kieran’s, Manly Vale and St Cecilia’s, Balgowlah have been places of worship, welcome, and service on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Each church has its own history, shaped by the faith of local families, the dedication of clergy, and the presence of Catholic schools that continue to form generations of young people.
Today, these two communities form one parish family: The Catholic Community of North Harbour.

Below is a simple timeline of our shared story.

Our two parish primary schools are integral to our identity and mission:

St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School, Manly Vale
Founded in 1954, St Kieran’s has formed generations of children in faith, learning, and community. The school remains closely connected to parish life and the Augustinian tradition.

St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School, Balgowlah
Serving the community since the mid‑20th century, St Cecilia’s continues to nurture children in a spirit of welcome, compassion, and Gospel values. The school maintains strong ties with St Cecilia’s Church and the wider parish.
Together, our schools and churches form one parish family — united in faith, mission, and the Augustinian spirit of community.
St Cecilia’s Church
-
St Cecilia’s was originally a diocesan parish, established in 1938 — long before the Augustinians arrived.
-
The first church was blessed in 1939, built through the generosity of local families.
-
St Cecilia’s has always had a strong musical identity, inspired by its patron saint, the patroness of music.
-
The Augustinians began assisting pastorally from the 1970s onward, eventually becoming the regular shepherds of the community.

St Kieran’s Church
-
St Kieran’s Parish was founded in 1941, serving the rapidly growing Manly Vale area.
-
The original church was a simple timber structure — parishioners helped build it by hand.
-
St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School opened in 1954, staffed by the Sisters of St Joseph, and remains a cornerstone of parish life.
-
The parish has long been known for its strong family ministry and community outreach.

Our Two Schools
-
Both St Kieran’s and St Cecilia’s schools were established to support local Catholic families and remain deeply connected to parish life.
-
Generations of parishioners have attended one of the two schools — many now send their own children or grandchildren.
-
The schools collaborate closely on sacramental programs, liturgies, and community events.

Becoming One Parish
-
In 2004, St Kieran’s and St Cecilia’s were officially amalgamated to form the Catholic Community of North Harbour.
-
The Augustinians were entrusted with the pastoral care of the unified parish, continuing a relationship that stretches back decades.
-
The parish now celebrates major feasts, sacramental programs, and community events across both churches, reflecting one heart and one mission.

A Parish with a New Identity
-
For many years, the parish used three logos — St Kieran’s, St Cecilia’s, and the Augustinian emblem.
-
In 2024, the Parish Pastoral Council commissioned a single parish logo to reflect unity, synodality, and shared mission.
-
The new logo was joyfully launched at Easter 2024, just ahead of the Jubilee Year 2025.
